Bigfoot: The Hide & Seek Champion of North America

By far one of the most popular and well known cryptids from North America. Many people have claimed to see this ape like human creature walking upright, which is commonly known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch.

Description

Bigfoot is often described as a large, muscular, and bipedal ape-like creature covered in black, dark brown, or dark reddish hair. Anecdotal descriptions estimate a height of roughly 6–9 feet (1.8–2.7 m), with some descriptions having the creatures standing as tall as 10–15 feet (3.0–4.6 m). Some alleged observations describe Bigfoot as more “man-like”, with reports of a human-like face. Common features include broad shoulders, no visible neck, and long arms. Some alleged nighttime sightings have stated the creature’s eyes “glowed” yellow or red.

History

Legends of wild, hairy humanoids exist throughout the world, and such creatures appear in the folklore of North America, including the mythologies of indigenous people. The term “Bigfoot” was popularized in the 1950s after a trail of oversized footprints was discovered in Northern California by a logger named Jerry Crew. However, this was later revealed to be a prank by another logger named Ray L. Wallace. The most famous evidence for Bigfoot’s existence is the Patterson–Gimlin film, which allegedly shows a female Bigfoot walking across a clearing in Bluff Creek, California in 1967. However, many people believe the film is a hoax or a misidentification of a bear or a person in a costume.

Bigfoot is an icon within the fringe pseudoscience of cryptozoology, and an enduring element of popular culture. Scientists have historically discounted the existence of Bigfoot, considering it to be the result of folklore, misidentification, and hoax, rather than a living animal. No conclusive physical evidence has been found to support Bigfoot’s existence, such as bones, DNA, or clear photographs. However, some people still believe that Bigfoot is real and continue to search for it in remote areas of North America.
